Singapore Employment Pass (EP)

Employment Pass (EP) is a work visa that managers, specialists, executives and other professionals need to relocate to and work in Singapore. After incorporating their Singapore company, business owners can apply for their EP to relocate and run their company.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) grants the Singapore employment pass, on case to case basis, to candidates who fulfil Singapore employment pass eligibility criteria. Validity of employment pass granted to first-timer is up to 2 years. Ep renewals are for up to 3 years.

Dependant Pass & Long-Term Visit Pass for Family Members

After the approval of their pass, the employment pass holders earning qualifying salary can bring their immediate family members to Singapore. The family members need to meet the prescribed criterion before getting approval for their Dependant Pass or Long-Term Visit Pass.

Singapore EP holders earning S$6,000 or more in fixed monthly salary can apply for Dependant’s Passes for their legally married spouse and unmarried children (including legally adopted) under 21.

EP holders earning S$6,000 – $12,000 a month or more can apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass for their common-law spouse, unmarried handicapped children above 21 years of age, and unmarried step-children under 21.

EP holders earning more than $12,000 can also apply for LTVP for their parents.

Before applying for a candidate’s EP pass, it is advisable to use Employment Pass Self-Assessment Tool (SAT). It will determine whether or not you qualify for an employment pass.

Application assessment

MOM approves or disproves each EP application based on its merits.

The candidates having at least S$4,500/month are eligible for an EP, but those earning S$6000 to S$7000 are preferred for more experienced candidates.
Candidates with tertiary education/bachelors/post-graduate degrees from reputable institutions have an advantage.
Candidates without a tertiary degree are assessed based on their job profile, work experience, employment history, salary earned and demand for their skills in Singapore.
Singapore employers with high paid-up capital and the ability to pay salaries stand a higher chance of succeeding with the EP applications.
As per the Fair Consideration Framework (FCF), Singapore company must post an advertisement on Jobs Bank and mention Job posting ID on its EP application.
Companies with 10 or fewer employees and those filling a post paying $20,000/monthly or employing intra-corporate transferee (ICTs) are exempted from the ad posting.
MOM also considers the candidate’s age, nationality, roles and responsibilities, and reputation of the employer

Application completion

MOM expects the following documents from the EP application:

Resume or curriculum vitae stating candidate’s educational and employment history
Copies of educational degree/diploma certificates and testimonials supporting employment record
A copy of the candidate’s passport details
The candidate’s written consent allowing Singapore employer company or its employment agent to apply on their behalf for the EP
Singapore employer’s latest business profile or company details lodged with ACRA
Other additional documents asked by MOM

The candidate needs to submit all the required documents in English.

What is the Singapore employment pass?

Employment Pass (EP) is a work visa approved by MOM. Foreign workers need it to relocate and work in Singapore. Foreign business owners can also acquire it after registering a Singapore company to immigrate and manage their company.

What are the types of employment pass in Singapore?

Employment pass is one of the primary work visas issued by the MOM to the foreigners for the relocation and their work stay in Singapore. There are 3 types of employment passes.

Singapore Employment Pass

Foreign workers can acquire this pass if they have the required experience, qualifications, educational certifications. It is tied to the Singapore employer.

There are 3 sub-types of employment pass – P1, P2, and Q1

Training Employment Pass

The Training Employment Pass is designed for foreign students or trainees who opt to undergo practical training for their future management, executive or specialist-level jobs in Singapore. The pass is valid for 3 months and is non-renewable.

Only those sponsored by well-known Singapore employers, studying at an acceptable institution or earning at least $3,000 in fixed monthly salary are eligible for this pass. Foreign students need to show that the training is part of their study.

Personalised Employment Pass (PEP)

PEP is awarded to employment pass holders earning at least $12,000/month or foreign employees earning at least $18,000/month. It is not tied to an employer and offer pass holder job flexibility. PEP is issued only once for 3 years.

How to apply for an employment pass in Singapore?

How to renew a Singapore Employment Pass?

To renew your employment pass, submit a copy of your EP, passport, residential address, and your salary per month to us. We will take care of the rest of the proceedings.

How to check the status of employment pass in Singapore?

You need to visit MOM’s EP Online portal for this purpose. It is a free service that you can use to check your EP application status. Search by using the number on the Acknowledgement Page generated when you submit your application.

How long to get an employment pass in Singapore?

If you apply on EP Online for a Singapore employment pass, the approval may take up to 3 weeks for most cases. However, if you are an overseas company without a Singapore-registered office, the approval for the pass may take up to 8 weeks.

Why does employment pass gets rejected in Singapore?

Your employment pass application may get rejected for one of the following reasons:

You applied for your own employment pass. Only a Singapore employer company or appointed visa agency is allowed to apply for the selected candidates.
Your monthly salary, designation/role, education level and skill-set appears suspicious for the MOM officials.
Your skill-set, experience and expertise aren’t that exclusive, valuable or unique. The official may feel that a local worker may prove to be the right candidate for the available job.
Your employer has a history of not following fair employment practices and prefers not to hire locals.
Your medical examination has revealed health-related issues.

Can an employment pass holder start a business in Singapore?

Yes! Employment pass holders can register their companies in Singapore and be its shareholder or owners. They can work as one of its foreign managing directors. However, they cannot act as its local or resident director.

Personalised employment pass holders cannot start a company in Singapore. They have to acquire an Entrepass for the purpose.
